Let’s Restore our Historic Stage!
The building that is now Ivoryton Playhouse was built in 1911 as a recreation hall for the employees of the Comstock-Cheney factory. After the Hall was purchased by Milton Stiefel, Ivoryton Playhouse became the first self-supporting summer theater in the nation. Countless stars and legends have walked the boards of the Ivoryton stage, including Marlon Brando, Ethel Waters, Betty Grable, Groucho Marx, and Katherine Hepburn.
Over the course of the past 28 years, the Ivoryton Playhouse Foundation has completed many renovations on the 112-year-old building, including new shingles, a new heating and airconditioning system, new seats, and a state-of-the-art theatrical sound system. The next critical restoration is that of our beloved stage itself. A theatre is more than just a building and a stage is more than just boards; our restoration will preserve the legacy of Ivoryton Playhouse while ensuring the ability to bring the Shoreline the highest quality in live theatre.
Imagine what the next 100 years will bring!
A multifaceted performer, musician and storyteller extraordinaire, David Lutken has captivated audiences worldwide with his contagious passion for music and a presence that is magnetic and endearing. From his Outer Critic’s Circle Award-nominated portrayal of Woody Guthrie in “Woody Sez” to his critically acclaimed roles in Ring of Fire and The Will Rogers Follies on Broadway, he has consistently enchanted audiences with his artistry. David has graced the boards of the Ivoryton stage many times in shows such as The Porch on Windy Hill, The Road: My Life with John Denver and just last year in Ring of Fire.
Lutken’s Seat of the Pants Band, aptly named for David’s quip that “rehearsal is cheating”, is a dynamic ensemble performing a combination of folk, blues, country and rock. With their irresistible blend of music and storytelling, they speak straight to the heart of any music lover and invite any and all to join in the joy of music making.
