The building that is now Ivoryton Playhouse was built in 1911 as a recreation hall for the employees of the Comstock-Cheney factory. After the Hall was purchased by Milton Stiefel, Ivoryton Playhouse became the first self-supporting summer theater in the nation. Countless stars and legends have walked the boards of the Ivoryton stage, including Marlon Brando, Ethel Waters, Betty Grable, Groucho Marx, and Katherine Hepburn.
Over the course of the past 28 years, the Ivoryton Playhouse Foundation has completed many renovations on the 112-year-old building, including new shingles, a new heating and airconditioning system, new seats, and a state-of-the-art theatrical sound system. The next critical restoration is that of our beloved stage itself. A theatre is more than just a building and a stage is more than just boards; our restoration will preserve the legacy of Ivoryton Playhouse while ensuring the ability to bring the Shoreline the highest quality in live theatre.
Imagine what the next 100 years will bring!
