Special Event: Arlington Sons – Monday, November 12

TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVED

Monday, November 12th at 2:00pm
Monday, November 12th at 7:30pm

It is with great honor that the Ivoryton Playhouse presents Arlington Sons to be performed by David Pittsinger and his son, Richard Pittsinger. Lyrics by Scott Eyerly. This moving piece was personally commissioned by David to honor his late father – a US Army veteran and distinguished guard at Arlington National Cemetery.

Lyrical and expressive, Arlington Sons tells the story of a Father bringing his young Son to Arlington National Cemetery for the first time, to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Arlington Sons illuminates a universal experience—the changing of the guard between generations—in a uniquely American context. It is believed to be the first-ever musical composition written for a real-life father and son.

Metropolitan Opera and Broadway star David Pittsinger commissioned Arlington Sons in 2011, not only as a duet to perform with his son Richard, a talented soloist and graduate of New York’s esteemed Saint Thomas Choir School, but also in tribute to his late father, a U.S. Army Veteran who served as a distinguished Tomb Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. Through Scott Eyerly’s exquisite words and music, a true and reverent moment in time is captured.

Since the world premiere of its orchestral version with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, Arlington Sons has been acclaimed by media as “a marvelous mixture of the solemnity of the moment and vivaciousness of youth” and “a loving lesson in honor, sacrifice and patriotism.” Additional highlights include performances with the West Point Band, the United States Air Force Symphony Orchestra and The Society of the Honor Guard/Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as national broadcasts on prominent public radio stations.

Arlington Sons is approximately 14 minutes in length.  The Ivoryton Playhouse performance will include other patriotic songs and memorial readings as a tribute within the concert.
